Decorating is SO much FUN!
I enjoy decorating SO much that it’s a stress relief for me. In all honestly, I use to be CLUELESS when it came to decorating but I have always been picky about how the decorations I did have were staged. In college, it would actually irritate me to leave the pillows on my couch unfluffed before bed (maybe that was a little rediculous).
One of the most exciting things to me about getting married was being able to decorating our home. My husband was (and still is to an extent) the eyes and brains behind our home decor, though. He’s really good at color and pattern coordination and decor placement. So, I actually would have him stage our fireplace mantel decor or our living room or our dining room, etc… And i’d watch intently and pay attention to how he’d place the things he’d place. In time, and after a THOUSAND, “honey, how does this look here?!”, I was finally able to decorate on my own. I still refer to Pinterest for help a lot and realllly like that platform for ideas.
But, this house is lived in…
Even though I’m particular about my home decor, our house is still very much lived in (meaning, it’s a mess a lot, lol). We have two rescue pups and a rescue kitty cat (that I love so rediculously much) so there’s fur in this home and they occasionally come in with muddy paws; I don’t make my guests take their shoes off at the door, and sometimes we track wet feet from the pool inside. That being said, there’s a lot of sweeping and mopping that must take place.
Don’t be fooled by all of the staged pictures; There’s stuff on the counter, laundry piled on the dryer waiting to be folded, floors needing a good sweep, stuff on the kitchen counter, furniture needing dusting, dog food pebbles lying sporadically on the floor around the dog dishes and shreds of torn rope from dog toys strewn across the couches. (So glamorous, right?!) While I’d love for my house to look staged all of the time, it’s just not practical so, “excuse the mess, my pets are enjoying their life here… and also we live here.” Hahahaha. My husband jokingly says he’s going to start a blog called “behind the blog” and post pics of my messes in between my picture staging days. While I’ll admit I’d be mortified, it would actually be a pretty hilarious thing to do… I could see that being one of those funny viral things (Philip, if you’re reading this, this is not your green light to proceed ?).
All this being said, I like our home to feel like we live in it (and also kind of look like we don’t; kind of a home-y meets organized and arranged), Haha! I’ve gotten a lot better at that balance over the years, but my hope is that my home always feels warm and welcoming.
