Where do I start?!
Have you ever asked yourself this question when gazing hopelessly at your fireplace; wondering, what do I even put where? I have….and this is what I’ve come to learn:
Decorating my mantel has become one of my favorite things because, not only is it fun, it’s the first thing people see when they walk in our front door.
The easiest way to decorate is to think of your decor in terms of a triangle; you want your point (something with height) in the middle and then your shorter items down to the bottom left and bottom right. Or, you can even choose to do the “reverse option” and flip this by putting the taller items on the outside and the shortest in the middle!
Here’s a pic of our fireplace decor for reference: Pretend for a second that the large black frame and the wooden picture frames are not there…you’re now, then, just looking at the decorative tile, the boxwood, the candle, the clock and the lantern. I have staged these items to be the “reverse option” where the shortest is in the middle and the tallest on the outside ends. BUT, I wanted something a bit more so I added the triangle option as well but adding the two frames. This allowed for me to have the triangle option and the reverse option, both. Because I followed the proportionate orders, both options work together well.
Here’s an arrow picture showing, more clearly, what I’m talking about:
